![]() ![]() ![]() The way these characters interact with each other is funny, heartwarming, and emotional, and ties into the themes of the game very well. Despite the grand stakes of the story, it remains personal, and puts a focus on characters as well as the plot. ![]() For example, enemies make their return all the way from the first game, and is a treat for long-time fans while not impacting the experience for newcomers it’s fanservice, and damn good fanservice at that. The game is filled with love and care for this franchise and there are many references to prior games, but never so much that newcomers won’t be able to follow along. For veterans, there’s a lot this game has to offer in turn for your dedication. For newcomers, there is a video the game offers you that explains the overall plot of every prior game. Between DMC 4 and 5, this same demon approached Nero, stealing his demonic arm in the process to gain demonic power of his own. Dante is hired by a mysterious man named V who tells him about the existence of a powerful demon who plans to harvest humans for their blood in order to create a fruit granting him ultimate power. The story takes place five years after the events of DMC4. Probably because I won’t ever stop playing it. It’s everything I love about video games and is a game I’ll remember forever. Devil May Cry 5 is everything I had heard it was and more. I’m not going to speak for fans anymore, I’m going to speak for myself. Fans had to wait 11 years for a proper sequel to the fourth entry, but oh boy did they get one. After Devil May Cry 2 almost killed the franchise, a rushed 4th entry, and an ill-conceived reboot that’s still decent on its own, this game should not exist. It hasn’t been a perfect ride up until this moment, but DMC has established itself as a character action masterclass. What started as a discarded Resident Evil 4 prototype ended up being a PS2 classic that grabbed enough fans to establish itself as the six game franchise it is today. It’s been a real journey playing through the entire Devil May Cry series this year. This review is light on spoilers so newcomers are free to read.
